High School Athletics
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH), established in 1909, comprises 20 athletic programs from independent and charter schools. Member institutions include ‘Iolani School, Punahou School, and Kamehameha Schools – Kapalama, among others. These schools participate in a variety of sports at intermediate, junior varsity, and varsity levels, fostering a competitive environment for student-athletes.
For instance, ‘Iolani School offers a comprehensive athletics program with teams in sports such as baseball, basketball, canoe paddling, cross country, football, golf, judo, kayaking, sailing, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.
Collegiate Sports
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH Mānoa) is a prominent institution in Honolulu’s sports landscape. As a member of the NCAA Division I, UH Mānoa offers a wide range of athletic programs. The university’s teams, known as the Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine, compete in sports including baseball, basketball, football, golf, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and water polo.
In 2024, UH Mānoa announced its transition to full membership in the Mountain West Conference, effective from the 2026–27 academic year. This move encompasses 15 conference-sponsored sports, enhancing competitive opportunities for student-athletes.
Community Sports and Recreation
Beyond organized school sports, Honolulu offers a plethora of recreational activities for the community.
